Every team in the NFL has now played a grand total of one game this season yet already we've got quarterback situations all across the league. Byron Leftwich, released too late to hook on with any team before the season starts, is now sitting pretty thanks to injuries and ineffectiveness all around the league.
The Giants could be a fit for Leftwich if Eli Manning is out for an extended period of time although he'd probably prefer to sign somewhere that would afford him the chance to start beyond the short term. Big Blue is likely going to start Jared Lorenzen, the only NFL QB tubbier than Leftwich, this Sunday and if he fails to squeeze through the opening they have only Anthony Wright as an option. Wright has started in the NFL before with Baltimore but the less said about those performances the better for those of us who enjoy competency under center.
Speaking of Baltimore, the Ravens have been rumored as a landing place for Leftwich as well and after Steve McNair's benching in the fourth quarter last night said rumors will only spread faster. Sure McNair was sent to the bench because of a groin injury but he was playing with that injury for some time before Brian Billick made the choice to go with Kyle Boller for the stretch. One look at McNair's face on the bench is all you needed to know that he wasn't there because he felt he couldn't play. Judging by Boller's typically dismal performance the Ravens could use Leftwich if and when they decide that McNair isn't their guy anymore.
Cleveland would probably kill to have any of those three quarterbacks and they will have a new starter this weekend after dealing Charlie Frye to the Seahawks today. I thought the Jags releasing Leftwich days after proclaiming him their starter was odd, I think the Browns benching Frye a quarter into the season and trading him less than 48 hours later borders on insane. He's not a great quarterback or even a good one but he was the one you thought served you best after training camp. It doesn't say much for your decision-making ability that you couldn't stick with that long enough to watch an episode of Two and a Half Men.
The Falcons got two interceptions from Joey Harrington, each returned for a touchdown, and only have the untested Chris Redman (how many awful former Raven QBs can one league handle) and D.J. Shockley in reserve. Because of that they are said to be kicking the tires on former 49er and Buc Tim Rattay as well as waiting to see if Andrew Walter gets cut by Oakland in the wake of JaMarcus Russell's signing. Should they sign either one of them I think I'd officially rather be one of Michael Vick's pit bulls than a fan of the Falcons in 2007.
