What is it about the New York Giants? There might not be a more irritating player in recent football history than Tiki Barber. The sanctimonious quitter is finally buried on morning TV where he won't bother anyone but housewives anymore but his place has quickly been taken by Michael Strahan.
Strahan claims he's been betrayed by the Giants because they've responded to his request for time to contemplate retirement by saying that they'll just move on and that he should prepare to be fined if he does decide to report to camp eventually.
"How could he not feel betrayed?" said one source who spoke with Strahan yesterday. "After spending 14 years, after being a loyal and dedicated player to an organization, and now that he is considering retirement, the most difficult decision in his career, instead of giving him space to make this decision, people are talking about fines and replacements?
"I am really sad that this situation is being portrayed the way it is. This is not about money."
It's not about money? He wasn't saying a thing about retirement in March when he asked the Giants to give him a raise from the $4 million he already had coming to him for this season. He wasn't talking about retirement when the Giants were talking about moving Mathias Kiwanuka from defensive end to linebacker when Strahan might have said "Hey, team that's made me rich and famous, maybe you shouldn't do that because I'm not sure that I'll be back next season."
If its not about money than what is it about? Strahan hasn't answered that question because he'd be a liar if he did say it had anything to do with anything other than money. If it was about not wanting to play anymore he would have had these thoughts during the offseason not when training camp started. This is like when the stars of a television show get "sick" before filming because they want more money per episode. When they do that they run the risk of having their characters killed off, that's exactly what the Giants should do to Strahan.
god, how I wish the Packers would take this tack with Favre. Maybe the two could go out together, just the way they rigged the sack record.
