Multiple choice time: "It's an embarrassment for me to be wearing this (bleeping) uniform, the way I'm performing."
A. Jeff Weaver after giving up seven runs on Sunday
B. Pittsburgh's Jason Bay, 0-for-3 on Sunday, who is now hitting .249 on the year
C. Scot Shields of Anaheim after blowing a two-run lead.
D. Barry Bonds
If I added the second part of the quote, "Now get out of here" you'd probably get it in a heartbeat. Bonds ripped himself after going 0-for-5 in the Giants' 5-3 loss to the Dodgers and extending his hitless streak to 20 at-bats. He went 0-for-2 in the All-Star Game as well, so if you're a stickler it's been 22 fruitless trips to the plate for Barry. The Dodgers have now won 11 straight games in San Francisco meaning that there should be quite a few orange-clad warriors who are embarassed to be wearing those (bleeping) uniforms. My vote for what's bleeped? Cuntastic.
- The seven runs off Weaver weren't the worst part of a losing Sunday for the Mariners. Ichiro took a Justin Verlander pitch off the knee during the 11-7 Tiger victory and had to hobble to the bench. X-rays showed no broken bones and the Mariners expect their $90 million man back in the lineup before too long. The Mariners also had to suffer through a sixth inning when they handed Detroit three runs thanks to three wild pitches. They also failed to capitalize on a shaky Verlander in the first two innings. He threw 47 pitches but Seattle pushed just two runs across and allowed the righty to escape en route to his 11th win.
- Bay's dreadful season continued in Pittsburgh's 5-1 loss to Atlanta. Buddy Carlyle gave up four hits and one run in eight innings for the Braves, his second straight eight inning win, and Edgar Renteria pounded four hits. The win gave the Braves a sweep to open the second half and kept them a game and a half behind the Mets in the East.
- Shields couldn't provide one for the Angel lead in the eighth inning of Sunday's tilt with the Rangers. Mark Teixeira and Marlon Byrd each doubled to tie the score at 4 and Teixeira returned in the 11th with a home run off Justin Speier to help the Rangers salvage the third game of the series in Anaheim. He was 4-for-12 in the three games, his first in more than a month because of a quadriceps injury while Speier was pitching for the second straight day after going on the DL at the end of April. He struck out the side Saturday but his luck ran out against his fellow returnee.
- The wind was blowing out at Fenway Park so Toronto starter Jesse Litsch formulated a plan to succeed around that. "I throw a lot of ground balls, so I just try to keep the ball on the ground," said Litsch. And get this, it worked. The Red Sox fell 2-1 despite a good start from Josh Beckett, who wasn't thrilled with the way things turned out on Sunday. I still vote cuntastic.
