Even though yesterday's weather in New York would have been a good fit for a football Sunday, it's still a bit early to start thinking about the Jets. I know training camp is starting this week but normally it's August 15 or whenever the fantasy football draft rolls around before thoughts of Chad Pennington, Jonathan Vilma and the Mangenius dance through my dreams. Yet an article today caught my eye and was worthy of mention. Curtis Martin's going to retire.
Yes, I know what you're thinking, didn't we go through this a year ago. Indeed we did but because of the vagaries of NFL salary cap rules and, presumably, Martin's not-yet quenched desire to continue competing, his retirement was never made official. Lest the waiting stretch out to Favre-ian proportions, a formal announcement is due this week. It's quite a bit easier to swallow a future without Curtis this time around. Thomas Jones is in the fold, the Jets know they have a player in Leon Washington and have built an offensive line that can carry those two successfully. It was hard not having Martin around last season but we got used to it. It shouldn't be as hard this time around but that doesn't mean I won't miss seeing #28 tote the rock.
It's a shame the Martin story, when it becomes official later this week, will be buried because of all the Vick crap and the NBA stuff going on.
Sucks, he deserves to recognition.

Such is the fate of guys who spend their time playing football and being a decent human being instead of killing dogs and fixing games.
