Say this for the Bronx Bombers, they know how to break out of a slump in style. Last Monday the Yankees were waiting to find out if Joe Torre or Brian Cashman would be fired in the wake of a week and a half from hell. Then, on Tuesday, Phil Hughes nearly pitched a no-hitter and on Thursday they swept a doubleheader. Friday night brought a return of the bad pitching bug but Chien-Ming Wang returned with another bid for history on Saturday. And then yesterday they iced the cake by finishing the deal to bring Roger Clemens back to the Bronx.
Give them big points for the style with which they announced the deal as well. When Clemens stood up and addressed the crowd you could feel the chill that went throught the stadium through the television. The element of surprise can never be underestimated and even with Darell Rasner throwing well in the first Yankee shutout of the season, the Stadium crowd knew that they had just heard from the real answer to the pitching problems. It's the richest contract in the game, at a pro-rated $28 million, and Clemens will get the same ability to travel when and if he wants that he had in Houston. With so many veterans and big money players already on the team that could have been a problem but, when you have your sixth rookie of the season starting a game tonight, petty jealousies will all disappear by Rocket's first start come the beginning of June.
One of the guys over at Highbrid Nation wrote a very interesting post about Roger Clemems and and the "real" reason he has come back to play for the Yankees. Good Stuff.
