So this is what all the hype was about, eh? Philip Hughes just limped off the mound after delivering a strike two pitch to Mark Teixeira in the bottom of the seventh inning and it's a double whammy of a shame that he did. Obviously the thought that there's an injury to the prized pig is a scary one for the Yankees but he pulled the hamstring (or hyperextended it or his knee, it's not clear just yet) six and a third innings into a no-hitter. He'd walked three but the Bombers turned two double plays behind him and he'd thrown only 83 pitches in when he left the game. Mike Myers is in and just got out of the inning without giving up a hit, so there's still a chance for the no-no.
Joe Girardi is sounding very pessimisstic up in the booth right now and it looks like trainer Gene Monahan, talking to Andy Pettitte in the dugout, said the word popped but my lip reading skills are about as good as Kramer's so take that for what it's worth. It was some preview of Hughes' skill set though, he was slicing through the Rangers with ease, here's hoping it's nothing so serious.
UPDATE: Hank Blalock doubled leading off the eighth to break up the no-hitter but the Bombers continue to plaster Ranger pitching. Robby Cano picked up his fourth hit, a double, and they lead Texas 10-1 in the ninth. There's still no word on the severity of the Hughes injury. Looks like Howard Rubenstein's assistant's missive fired the boys up after all.
UPDATE: Word is that Hughes will return to New York to have a MRI on his hamstring and the "popping" lip-reading from earlier looks like it was a good job on the part of the YES crew (good to hear Bobby Murcer) and myself. Jorge Posada confirms it in the AP story and, frankly, it doesn't seem like good news is right around the corner.
that'd be the second time the rangers get no-hit. they have a good lineup too.

Hughes really tore them up. I didn't see the Buehrle game but going off the fact that he faced the minimum I'd imagine it was a similar game. Hughes threw strike one all night and the Rangers got nervous in the service after that and swung like crazy. And that's without Selective Sammy in the lineup.
