When writing a lede, journalists want to come up with something that's going to invite the reader in to read the rest of the article. Stan Grossfeld of the Boston Globe has done just that with today's contribution to the sports section. I'm not usually a reader of articles on figure skating but I'll be damned if Grossfeld didn't grab me with this honey of a first sentence.
With the HIV virus running through his veins and two replacement ceramic hips that whistle while he leaps, Rudy Galindo landed a triple toe jump at the
Verizon Center.
The rest of the piece is a nice profile of Galindo, the first openly gay man to win the U.S. Men's Skating title, but never quite rises to the evocative little nugget that gets the ball rolling.

I'm glad one of us learned something from Betty's class.
