Yankee fans have to hope that Mike Pelfrey's performance against Colorado yesterday doesn't portend bad things for all early-20's starters. Pelfrey got pounded by the Rockies for six runs and eight hits in just three innings and the Mets fell 11-5. If John Mabry makes you horny, and he probably shouldn't, you'd be in heat after his home run and four RBI but for those of you who prefer a less grizzled veteran Matt Holliday drove in three pulse-pounding runs as well. If you're in the market for a Jewish fellow, don't discount Shawn Green. Three RBI give him 13 for the year and he's batting .351 making reports of his career circumcision premature.
- Barry Bonds keeps hitting home runs and the Giants keep winning baseball games. It was Bonds' third in four games while his team has won seven straight, the first time since June 2004, after topping the Dodgers 6-4 last night. Barry's 741st was a three-run shot in the first inning off Randy Wolf but San Francisco needed a Pedro Feliz longball in the top of the sixth to go ahead for good.
- Jake Peavy struck out nine straight Diamondbacks, one short of the major league record, and 16 overall but the normally unflappable Trevor Hoffman gave up a two-run, walkoff blast to Stephen Drew to blow the game 3-2. Peavy struck out every hitter he saw in the second, third and fourth innings but walked Eric Byrnes on a 3-2 pitch to start the fifth. Byrnes checked his swing but was ruled safe and Tom Seaver's record was safe for another night.
- Charlie Manuel's job is safer than it was a week ago because the Phillies have rolled off five straight victories to steady their once-sinking ship. Chase Utley was 5-for-5 with three RBI in the 9-3 win against Washington, raising his average to .296 after yesterday's play. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard each hit home runs and Jon Lieber cruised through six innings for his first win as a starter.
- Jarrod Washburn threw a three-hit shutout and the Mariners beat the A's 2-0 in Oakland. It was the first win of the season for the lefty and a good sign for the reeling Mariner rotation which needed a strong outing. Joe Blanton was a hard luck loser. He went the distance as well but got dinged by solo homers by Jose Guillen and Kenji Johjima. That was all Washburn needed.
