Willie Randolph is the latest beneficiary of the explosion of spending in baseball this offseason. The Mets manager signed a three-year contract extension worth a total of $5.65 million, quite a change from the $700,000 he was due under the terms of his original deal. It's hard to argue that Willie didn't deserve a salary bump after winning 180 games and a division title over his first two seasons in the Met dugout. Imagine how much they would have given him if his team hadn't slipped on a banana peel in the NLCS against a Cardinal club that won 14 fewer games during the regular season.
