Chris Young of the Padres danced with history for seven and a third innings until Brad Hawpe drilled a double to break up a no-hit bid. It wasn't enough to lead the Rockies past the Friars, though, as Young's near-masterpiece gave his squad a 2-0 victory. The 6'10" former Princeton hoopster struck out eight Rockies en route to the victory and got all the offense he needed when Dave Roberts singled home a run in the third inning. Interestingly Young and Hawpe are friends since childhood, both grew up in Texas and drinks will likely be on Hawpe the next time they are hanging in the Lone Star State.
- Despite A.J. Burnett's injury and Josh Towers's incompetence and a just generally bad pitching staff, the Toronto Blue Jays are only a game and a half off the pace in the AL East. That's because of their thundering lineup, two members of which combined for five home runs in last night's 8-5 win over the Red Sox. Vernon Wells connected three times and Troy Glaus twice as the Jays steamrolled Boston starter Josh Beckett for a second straight win north of the border. Wells and Glaus have hit 32 home runs between them already this year and even with the poor Canadian exchange rate that's worth a lot in any attempt to stay among the leaders.
