Yesterday's New York Post reported that Stephon Marbury said he wanted to "die a Knick." Strangely that may bring him closer to Larry Brown than working together ever did because Brown yesterday said that he felt like a "dead man walking" thanks to his tenous job status. Stopping his car at a traffic light, Brown held court with reporters outside the Knick practice facility and discussed how the uncertainty and backstage machinations of James Dolan and Isiah Thomas are affecting him.
"As many questions as you have, I have," Brown said when asked to address the notion that he is finished as Knicks coach after a disastrous 23-59 season.
Brown said he had not spoken to the front office about his status and was operating in the same information vacuum that many others are. But he maintained that he wants to stay with the Knicks.
As asinine a move as it may be to jettison a coach one year after signing him to a massive contract, Dolan and Thomas need to end this sideshow pronto. They can try to make Brown's life miserable to cut his buyout from $40 to $25 million if they'd like, but Brown seems content to hang around until he gets his full payout. As well he should, because clearly the only thing the current Knick administration is good for is signing checks for work left undone and passing the cost onto season ticket holders and cable subscribers.
