With Gary Sheffield back in the lineup hopes were that the Yankees could ride out the storm of Hideki Matsui's injury by relying on the increasingly impressive Melky Cabrera. But Sheff looks like he's headed back to the DL after sitting out last night's game in Detroit. He says that the current injury to his wrist is unrelated to the previous one that caused him to miss time. He is definitely out for tonight's game and the Yankees will re-evaluate the situation but it seems likely that he's headed back to the infirmary.
Adding to Joe Torre's problems is Johnny Damon's foot which forced him out of the starting lineup last night as well. He has a broken bone that won't heal without rest but Damon plans to keep playing through it, even if it forces him to the bench one day a week. With all three starting outfielders struggling with injuries it seems unlikely that the Yankees can afford to stand pat and not add another body to the mix. Terrance Long's stay will likely be extended for beginners and Bubba Crosby is eligble to come off the DL this weekend, he'll likely take Sheffield's spot on the roster.
