The Yankee bats came early and stayed late but there was a brief lull that made a 6-1 lead obsolete and the 11-6 final less than indicative of how close the team came to blowing last night's game in Detroit.
Melky Cabrera and Andy Phillips keyed a second inning rally that netted the Bombers four runs but Ivan Rodriguez led a furious Tiger comeback, coming just a double short of hitting for the cycle and Kyle Farnsworth lost the lead in the eighth on a bases loaded fielder's choice to send the game into extra innings. Mariano Rivera controlled the pitching side of things in overtime, throwing three scoreless innings for his third win, which came courtesy of a five-run 11th inning. The big hit was a solo home run for Jason Giambi but Phillips drove in two more to give him four RBI in the game.
