That Nonexistent Steroid Problem In The NFL

While everyone is wetting themselves over Chipper Jones saying that A-Rod will have to answer questions about steroids because Jose Canseco might say that he's done them, another NFL player has actually tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Bears fullback Obafemi Ayanbadejo has been suspended for four games after testing positive for an anti-estrogen drug.

“I didn’t do my due diligence as a consumer before I ingested it,” said the nine-year veteran, who said he has never failed a steroid test before at any level. “I’ve been playing a long time, and I’ve never had a problem with supplements before. My history and what I’ve done as far as who I am stands on its own."

“At the end of the day, what I took was an anti-estrogen-related substance,” he said. “It depletes your estrogen levels, and I guess to some extent it’s supposed to help you with your testosterone levels. I’m not exactly sure. It wasn’t intentional.”

It's nice of Ayanbadejo to own up to making the mistake but it doesn't change the fact that there's no difference between a steroid and an anti-estrogen substance. He didn't know it was in there and that sucks for him but it doesn't change the facts about what he took. As they do whenever the subject comes up Steroid Nation breaks down the situation and comes to the conclusion that the supplement was poorly labeled. 

None of that explains why this is a blurb in newspapers across the country. Ayanbadejo may not be a superstar but a similar baseball player, let's say a reliever for the White Sox, wouldn't get the same pass for this that the Bear fullback does. Ayanbadejo is contrite and if this is true will probably use his four weeks off reading up on what he can and can't take but I doubt this will make anyone take the problem of PEDs in football any more seriously than they have up til now.
