489 losses and three last place finishes in the five seasons were a lot to swallow. A 36-49 mark that has them stuck in the cellar again this year is another big pill to fit down the gullet. Nine innings watching Jarrod Washburn and the Mariners shut out the Royal offense were one last bit of insult added to injury. Yet 27,497 hardy souls braved a rainy Kansas City Independence Day so that they could see a whizbanger of a fireworks show when the game ended with another Royal loss.
Alas, a fanbase already conditioned to disappointment had to suffer one more. The fireworks never went off.
The power outage that struck the Royals’ offense during the game Wednesday continued after the game. A power failure because of the rain before the game caused the Fourth of July fireworks to sputter. Two attempts were made to ignite the fireworks, but both times, they failed to go off.
In a gesture of thanks for waiting for the roman candles that never brightened the night sky the Royals have given each of the fans the chance to attend any other game at Kauffman Stadium this season. Their other option is a swift kick in the seat of the pants. Most fans opted for the second option.
