Get 'Em While They Last!

The stench from Wednesday's 92-90 loss to the Sixers still offends the olfactory system worse than the elephant dung left over from the Garden-sharing circus. The loss dropped the Knicks to 31-43 and kept them in tenth place with just eight games left to play but I guess that when you make an advertising buy there are no guarantees. Caveat Emptor is true when you fall for an advertising come-on as well, something that anyone who purchased the Knicks Stretch Run Packs being advertised on the New York Post website is surely aware of at this point. No one should be too upset though, you get playoff priority, although I'm not really sure how buying Knick tickets gets you such a sweet deal with the Nets ticket office.

Over at the Daily News website, however, Frank Isola has already turned his eyes to the offseason. Long a flag-waver for big Knick transactions that don't have a prayer of happening, Isola is using Kevin Garnett's visit to the Garden to start grinding the grist of the rumor mill.

Garnett is on the Knicks' radar but it is unlikely that he will be traded. Thomas would also have interest in Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal, who has talked openly about being traded. Seattle's Ray Allen is another possibility, along with free agents Gerald Wallace, Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter.

Thomas probably would be open to trading everyone with the exception of Eddy Curry. Stephon Marbury's value may never be higher but his contract still scares most potential suitors.

What Isola doesn't tell you is that he switched fresh brewed coffee for Folger's crystals this morning and thus isn't thinking right. I guess one of the impending free agents could demand a sign-and-trade with the Knicks but otherwise I don't see where the team has the pieces anyone would want in a straight-up trade. Two of the more marketable guys, David Lee and Jamal Crawford, are coming off of injuries and Curry without Marbury or Crawford would be the useless Curry of the stretch run. The guys that you'd most like to see in other unifroms - Channing Frye, Jared Jeffries, Nate Robinson, Steve Francis - can't have much value to any team that isn't going the Rachel Phelps in Major League route of trying to drive attendance down to miniscule levels.

Yeah, just what the Knicks need...more big names and outrageous contracts. Good thing Isiah was extended for his awesome job this year, maybe they'll shoot for only 10 games under .500 next year.

I think next year is a rebuilding year after reaching such a heady peak this time around.
