There were two big upsets in the college football world yesterday. USC opened the door to West Virginia getting their asses spanked by either Michigan or Ohio State by dropping a 33-31 game at Oregon State. The other upset was the 28-14 win by the Temple Owls over Bowling Green. Temple's win snapped a 20-game losing skid and prompted one of the best responses I've ever read on the internet (via Deadspin).
Mike Gibson runs a site called Temple Football Forever and I can only admire a man with such dedication to a football program that's been down for an awfully long time. He's held onto some serious anger at a writer named Karl Smith who wrote an article on October 5, 2004 welcoming Temple to the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green, a MAC mainstay, was Smith's alma mater and said he looked forward to hanging 70 on the Owls.
Biding his time like a skilled sniper Gibson waited for more than two years of losing, reading Smith's jibes who knows how many times, dreaming of a chance to get his just desserts. And got them he did yesterday, teaching us all a lesson in persistence.
